Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a performing arts centre located in Marina Bay, Singapore. Its unique, modern design is inspired by the durian fruit, a tropical fruit that is popular in Southeast Asia.
Visitors to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay can enjoy a wide range of performances, including theatre, dance, music, and comedy. The centre hosts both local and international artists and has multiple performance venues, including a concert hall, theatre, and outdoor theatre.
During our visit to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, we didn’t have the opportunity to catch a performance, but we were captivated by an installation named “Sang: A Journey to Return Home”.
This installation, which was inspired by the production Stream of Memory by Papermoon Puppet Theatre, tells a moving story of remembrance and reconnection. It highlights the impact of urbanisation and modern life on natural environments, while urging us to rekindle our relationships with others and nature. Stream of Memory was commissioned as part of In New Light – A Season of Commissions, which was launched to celebrate Esplanade’s 20th anniversary.
