Suage is a well-known and highly recommended Japanese chain that specialises in Japanese soup curry. With five branches in Sapporo alone, it has earned a respectable 3.71 rating on the popular Japan food review site, Tabelog, ranking the third among all soup curry restaurants.
However, while it is popular amongst many locals and tourists, we found it to be somewhat overrated. Continue to read our unbiased review to understand what you should really expect from Suage.
The serving of fresh oysters was quite generous, with six delicious fresh oysters. The portion of vegetables was also substantial and of decent quality. However, the soup curry at this restaurant was rather ordinary. The broth was just average, not particularly savoury or sweet, and lacked the depth of flavour that comes from using a variety of spices. Overall, it was a bit disappointing given the high expectations.
We ordered the shrimp broth as an add-on to our regular curry soup for an extra 150 yen. While we found it tastier than the regular soup, the shrimp flavor was still not particularly prominent.
We also paid extra for some mixed cheese as an add-on, in which the mixed cheese had a generous amount and added an extra layer of flavour to the dish. We highly recommend trying it out!
The lamb was also quite good with a rich and savoury taste, and the serving size was generous. However, we noticed that both bowls of soup curry were not served particularly hot, causing the soup to become lukewarm midway through the meal.
